Panchavadyam is the traditional orchestra of Kerala that includes of five different instruments. The instruments are: Timila, Maddalam, Ilathalam, Kombu and idakka. Pachavadyam holds a major position in the temple festivals of the State. In Panchavadyam, Kombu is a wind instrument while the others are percussion instruments. Pachavadyam performance starts with the Timila player. Then all other players except Kombu join him. Kombu player joins at a fixed time.
